According to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, as few as one in 10,000 sea turtle eggs reach adulthood. Olive ridley turtles nest in huge groups called arribadas. These arribadas can attract animals such as vultures, coatis, coyotes, jaguars, and raccoons, who may gather near the beach even before the arribada begins. Since 1987 the Foundation has worked tirelessly to preserve the environment, educate children, sponsor and fund organizations with the same goals, and raise funds for the care of sick sea turtles. Green sea turtles are what they eat! Green sea turtles are unique among sea turtles in that they are. Sea turtles are herbivorous, carnivorous or omnivorous depending on the species and the age. Jellyfish, crabs, fish, sea cucumbers and sponges are just a few examples of their varied diet. They have powerful jaws that make them capable of crushing animals with hard shells such as snails, as well as pulling out the grass rooted in the ocean floor. In 2009, a Sea Turtle, Inc. Intern designed a prosthetic device to help Allison swim! It was the first successful sea turtle prosthetic in the world. Since then, we have gone through several prosthetics, each one improving on the last.

Our island is the 2nd largest Barrier Island on the east coast and is home to a variety of wildlife. On any given day your family may encounter a bottlenose dolphin, snowy egret, blue heron, white tailed deer, an occasional manatee or a lazy alligator basking in the sun.

Discovered by Capt. William F. Hilton in 1663, our island offers your family an endless variety of outdoor activities including fishing, biking, tennis, daytrips, eco-tours and more! With over 30 golf courses in the surrounding area to choose from, Hilton Head is sure to please all levels of golf enthusiasts too.

Each season of the year brings a surprise to our Island. Every summer the Loggerhead Sea Turtles return to our island to lay their eggs in the warm sand of our beaches. In the fall our beaches are spotted with the Monarch Butterflies on their migratory journey to South America. Our mild winters bring an array of sand dollars and starfish to our uncrowded beaches and the freshest of oysters come from our ocean. In the spring, it is quite possible that you might spot a newborn deer calf beneath the flowering azaleas found across our island.

Sea Tortoise

Every day during nesting season, from May to October, our volunteers patrol
the beaches of St. Pete Beach, Shell Key and Outback Key. We find, mark and
protect new nests, so hatchlings can make it safely to the Gulf.

Sea Turtle Stranding & Salvage

Year round, Sea Turtle Trackers responds to calls about stranded turtles. Live turtles are
transported to authorized rehabilitation centers for care.

Community Outreach & Conservation

We work cooperatively with our local community to improve the condition of our beaches. Our goal is to make our area as turtle friendly as possible while helping visitors and residents enjoy this great place. We organize beach clean-ups throughout the year, which is a quick and easy way to get involved!

Education

Sea Turtle Trackers takes every opportunity to educate visitors and residents on the importance of caring for our local ecosystem.
