Super Mario 64 Nintendo Switch

Nintendo announced remastered versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy on Thursday. The classic remakes are expected to generate some much-needed buzz for Nintendo. Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform game for the Nintendo 64 and the first Super Mario game to feature 3D gameplay. It was developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo. As Mario, the player collects power stars while exploring Princess Peach's castle and must rescue her from Bowser.

Nintendo has confirmed its highly-anticipated trilogy of classic Super Mario game remasters headed to Nintendo Switch later this month. Dubbed as Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the collection will contain Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. It arrives on 18th September.

A limited number of physical copies will be made, while the digital version will only be sold on the Switch eShop until the end of March 2021. Bizarre.

The triple pack will see each game 'optimised' for Nintendo Switch. The trio will feature higher resolutions and 'smoother gameplay performance', Nintendo has said, as well as a music player mode to listen to tunes from the three games.

As expected, these are not radical redesigns or remakes of the original games. Also as expected, unfortunately there's no sign of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Oh, and when playing Galaxy's Co-Star mode, you will need separate Joy-Cons to use their pointer functionality. Worth noting for those with a Nintendo Switch Lite.

Eurogamer first reported on Nintendo's plans, which were delayed as a result of this year's E3 being cancelled, back in March.

Super Mario 64 came out in 1996 to revolutionize the way the world thought about video games. It wasn’t the first 3D platformer (just off the top of my head, Jumping Flash! and a French game called Alpha Waves both predate it), but it was the one that created the blueprint for such games going forward.

The game was hailed as a masterpiece immediately. In fact, Next Generation magazine called it the best video game ever made before the game was officially out (though Next Generation had played a review copy of the game by that point). Ultra Game Players magazine gave it their 1996 Game of the Year Award. Needless to say, Super Mario 64 is a hugely important part of video-game history.

Now, the game is getting a fresh lease on life on the Nintendo Switch via Super Mario 3D All-Stars. This collection includes three Mario games from the 3D era: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.
